1. AN END TO THE CLASSICS

"The day after L-B-L is like that moment, when you're a kid, surrounded by shredded wrapping paper, that you know Xmas is over."
-- @thebicyclerobot

And indeed, the spring classics season left us not with a bang but with a whimper. Two whimpers, in fact, with a suspicious Luxembourgian twang to them.

Just as it was no surprise that Gilbert crushed at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it was no surprise that ABanana held on to win the Spring Classics contest, having surged to a giant lead after putting 10 points on Nick Nuyens to win the Tour of Flanders. He ended up with a 574% return on his investment, aiming true in just under 20% of his predictions.

In the general Rouleur Derby classification, L-B-L brought a slight reshuffle at the top. Previous leader ArlandKeith went huge against Gilbert, and defending champion Haas went huge for him. Consequently, those players essentially swapped places, with Haas now enjoying a comfortable lead in the overall.

2. ON TO THE GIRO

The classics brought some wild results, but the Giro d'Italia's list of contenders is shorter, so big wins may be harder to come by.

Action starts Saturday with the team time trial. In addition to the usual win and show, there are various side bets, including the popular "Will a doping scandal force a rider out?"

I'll consider other requests for side bets for the next day or two. There will also be some intermediary bets down the road, including second- and third-chance wagers on the rest days.

Two things to remember: A. Picking the winner carries a 25 percent bonus; B. $50 goes to the player with the best Giro performance, thanks to the sponsorship of Riot Minneapolis.

3. AND TO CALIFORNIA

The Tour of California starts May 15. Start lists aren't complete yet, but I've tossed out a few preliminary bets. Will a scrappy U.S. continental team win a stage? And will Jens Voigt do what Jens Voigt does best and get in a break?
